Title: Favorite bands/singers of the 1980's
Post by: RobertB on January 26, 2010, 10:43:22 AM
I was thinking about this the other day on drive back home.  In no particular order, my faves are

               Quarterflash
               Firefall
               Heart
               Journey
               Foreigner
               Fleetwood Mac
               Berlin
               Pat Benatar
               Eddie Money
               Laura Branigan
               Olivia Newton-John

and a few more that I've forgotten right now (must refer back to my lp/cd collection).

                        Add your own, too,

O.K., I've just ordered Sade's Soldier of Love CD.  I'm eager to hear it.
Meanwhile, because I am on the mailing list, Marv Ross of Quarterflash/Trail Band tells that there is a special, intimite concert this Sunday in Portland.  Darn!  I'm too far away.  However, there will be a Trail Band concert in June and a Quarterflash concert in July.  I hope to make one or both.

Ooo, Al Stewart has a few upcoming concerts in California.  The one nearest to me is really expensive, and the other one is far away... 4 hours away.

Quote from: RobertB on August 20, 2010, 09:24:21 AMHeart is having a concert on September 19...
The Heart concert was amazing!  Hundreds and hundreds of people were there in the outdoor amphitheatre.  Heart played new songs from their new CD, "Red Velvet Car", and old favorite songs, like "Dreamboat Annie", "Barracuda", and "Crazy on You".  Nancy Wilson's voice belted out the lyrics with power.  Ann Wilson showed off her guitar prowess and her trademark "guitar hop/shuffle".  The night was cool and clear, and the crowd ranged in age from young to old.  I was so pleased with the evening, I bought the new Heart CD for $15 from their souvenir table.
FWIW, after the concert I went to the local SaveMart supermarket for a sandwich.  What was playing over the store's loudspeakers?  Music from Heart!  Today while cleaning out some papers, I dug out a Heart concert ticket; I had last seen them in Las Vegas back in 2004.

Next Sunday is the SCCAN meeting.  The night before that, Al Stewart is giving a concert in San Juan Capistrano (an hour south of the SCCAN meeting place).  So, I will go to that concert and listen to the melodies of the great Al Stewart.

A friend of mine just lent me his copy of "Hardest Hits, volume 1."  Very, very cool and quite rare.

There is currently one for sale for the low, low price of only $100.

When I was in the Pacific Northwest, I went to the July 28 concert of Quarterflash in Vancouver, Washiington (across the river from Portland, Oregon).  The clear warble of Rindy Ross' voice is always an amazing listening experience.  As is usual at their concerts, there were a couple of new Marv Ross' songs.  At the rate they are going, they should bring out another new CD of music.

Second time to see them this year,

P.S. While in no-sales-tax Oregon, I also had to buy Stevie Nicks' latest CD, "In Your Dreams", from the Fred Meyer department store.

Darn, last Saturday they had their 30th anniversary concert in Salem, Oregon.  I had to send them my apologies for not being able to attend.

While spending hours rearranging C= goods in the house, I listened to a lot of music -- many Pet Benatar CDs, some Sheena Easton, and soundtracks, like Rambo: First Blood II composed and conducted by the great Jerry Goldsmith.  In the old days, I had always thought of those 100-CD Sony players.  I should check out the going price on them.

     I'm signed up at absolute80s.com.
By the way, this morning I found out Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo were hosting the Sirius 80's channel (channel eight) for the 4th of July.  So, I woke up at 5 a.m. PT (8 a.m. ET) to hear them.  Well, they would come on every 20 minutes to talk a bit, but then it was back to the 80's music.  After 1 hour, 20 minutes, I had to go back to sleep.  :)

Though Mick Jones is the only original band member still left, classic band Foreigner is playing at the Fresno Fair tomorrow night.  Unfortunately, I have parent conferences tomorrow night, too.  Fortunately, AXS t.v. has Foreigner in concert and is playing it tonight and tomorrow morning.  I'm recording it!

Quote from: me on December 18, 2012, 11:59:43 AMI did win a Quarterflash - Take Another Picture camera on eBay!  It should arrive here just before Christmas.
The camera arrived... and I am underwhelmed.  :)  Typical souvenir quality plastic... plastic body, lens, and viewfinder.  One shutter speed, fixed aperture.  No provision for flash.  But hey... it says Quarteflash and Take Another Picture (one of their songs) on the cameraback.  :)  It also had two red windows on the cameraback in order to view the picture numbers on the film... but two?  Now I knew that old 120 film cameras had one red window.  However, when I measured a 120 film roll with that of the inner film compartment of the camera, the 120 roll was way too long for the camera.  It definitely did not fit a 35mm cartridge.  I did some research on the Net, remeasured the inner compartment, and have determined that it is supposed to hold a 127 film roll (46 mm. long).  Interesting... according to what I found out, 127 cameras faded away in the 1960s, but here was this camera from the early 1980's, possibly given away at concerts or to disc jockeys.
I looked for a source of fresh 127 film, found a few names, and checked eBay.  eBay lists 127 film at more than $30 a roll!  But I will buy at least one... so I can try it out and see the prints.

Perhaps to take pictures at the next Quarterflash concert!

This Labor Day Monday at the Los Angeles County Fair, a huge event is happening.  The Bangles will be in concert with Berlin and The Motels.  80's heaven!  However, try as I might, I couldn't crunch the numbers.  Gasoline would be about $120, the concert ticket would be about $45 for a good seat (not including admittance to the fair), and staying overnight would be another $50 to $80.  The real deal-killer is that the concert is at 7:30 at night... no way I can make it back to my area in any kind of rested state if I have work at 8 the next morning (the drive back is 4 hours).  :(
I don't know if the stars will ever align like this again.

Last night on the Audience channel, I watched a one-hour special on the band, Berlin.  Back in the 1980's, I collected their albums (and the CD's that came after), and I had never seen them in concert.  So, it was quite a treat to see the band in a concert from 2016 and to listen to lead singer, Terri Nunn, relate the history of the band and how their classic new wave pop music was created.  In fact, she said that they are working on 25 new songs!  When those songs are released, I'll be sure to get them!

On the AXS channel the other night, I watched a recent concert by Stevie Nicks and then a concert by Blondie.  Wow, I'll have to check to make sure that my CD collection is up-to-date with Nicks and Blondie (especially since Debbie Harry of Blondie was singing new songs).

As mentioned in one of my messages a few years ago, one of my favorite bands is Berlin with its lead singer, Terri Nunn.  One of my favorite television shows is T.J. Hooker.  Little did I know was that Terri Nunn appeared on T.J. Hooker!  After all these decades of watching reruns of T.J. Hooker, I never realized that she had been on that show.  It was only pointed out to me when I started listening to the podcast at

http://tjhookerpodcast.blogspot.com

I believe she starred in T.J. Hooker before hitting it big with Berlin.
In the episode entitled, "The Connection", she plays the girlfriend of a street drug dealer, and she does a creditable job of acting.
Now every time I listen to Berlin or see them in concert on the AXS tv network, I'll be thinking of T.J. Hooker!
