Title: Nothing to bring to Ray Carlsen?
Post by: RobertB on March 23, 2009, 07:55:23 PM
Usually I see master C= technician Ray Carlsen 2 or 3 times a year and bring him C= stuff to repair or pick up C= stuff that has been repaired.  When I see Ray on Monday, April 6.  I'll pick up a PET 8032 (I know that's repaired) and the PET 8050 (not sure if it's repaired fully).  However, I can't think of anything urgent to bring to Ray this time to fix.  I do have some 1571's that were trashed by our club, but we have others to take their place.  No C128s or C128D's that need urgent repairs.  I wonder if he'll work on cleaning up that monstrous PET 8300 printer that I have.  :)

I am a bit far away to bring things to him directly. But that is ok as I think he gets busy fixing things. But I am able to talk to him in email as I have started doing this week about a drive I am trying to fix.

Well, I was reminded today that I can bring in a PET 2040 drive for Ray to transport to another user in Seattle, Washington.

                    If Ray agrees,

Heh, I spoke too soon.  I was digging in the storage house and found that two of the club C128s need repair.

                      O.K., Ray will get those,

Great to hear that two more Commodore 128's will be saved from the landfill!

Well, here in California, it is now illegal to dump computers into the landfill.  C= computers must be saved from the recyclers.  I've seen a video of how other computers were broken up/stripped/chipped when the recyclers got their hands on them.

A fate that must not happen to C= computers,

I saw Ray on Monday, April 6, and delivered two flat C128s to repair and a 1551 drive to convert to 120 volts.  FWIW, Ray re-emphasized that he has "soured" on repairing PETs due to the difficulty of diagnosing them and finding repair parts.  He also said that he also had four other C= repair jobs.

I'll see him again in late June,

I have never liked the so called recyclers as they are no more than dumpers who grind everything up for raw materials most of which I suspect never gets reused properly. Worse yet many exploit third world labour under apalling conditions.

Hey, here in California we have the largest electronics recycling place, just an hour or so away from me.

If they do any recycling there its the only one. Take a serious look around there is very little electronics work in north america and its been that way for years! Also if you can get the documentary channel take a look for the documentary about it there. I have seen it on there but have forgotten the title.

Yeah, it was reported on the local news.  The reporter interviewed the owner and one of the workers (who was very happy to have a job).  The news piece showed some of the process of how the parts are dismantled.  Fortunately, no C= stuff was shown being dismantled.  :)

I was so surprised it was local,

Definately no truly retro stuff should be crushed as what cannot be fixed can be a parts source to keep others working. Especially for custom silicon such as 6510 sid vic2 pokey antic etc.
