All the online sources I can find just say "August 1982" and I suspect they're just copying from each other. Does anyone know of a
precise date for the introduction of the Commodore 64?
They maybe right and it sounds correct to me. My father purchased one in the fall of 1982
and I got a VIC-20 for Christmas. It was the first Christmas that I left everything else
untouched and went to my room to play with the VIC.
I would like to shed some light on this. But unfortunately I cannot as I did not get mine until april of 1984 and cannot even remember the exact date other than it was likely the 2nd or 3rd Wednesday of April that year. I still remember the place though the store itself is now a mal wart.
One thing that I do find slightly irksome is a lot of the retro computer sites are not original at all and do little if any research instead copying material from other sites verbatim including the more wildly inaccurate statements.
According to my August 1982 issue of Compute, it was introduced at the summer Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago, which was actually in the month of June. It also notes that the Commodore 64 was intended as a mid-range computer at the time.
