Never saw an A1200

On Thursday at his movie night dinner, when I brought in an Amiga 1200 for Amiga engineer R.J. Mical to autograph, several people there said that they had never seen an A1200 before... and this was in a crowd of Silicon Valley electronics industry people!  They took pictures of it, they picked it up, and they asked about it.  Even R.J. did not have one (though he did have an A4000).  I offered R.J. an A1200 for free, but he didn't take me up on the offer.

It would be no trouble, R.J.,

I now have Patrick T.'s photos of R.J autographing the A1200 and his Amiga Launch goodies.  There's R.J. giving the A1200 a smooch.

Good thing it was cleaned off before the kiss,  :)

You know, it doesn't surprise me that many people didn't know about the existence of the Amiga 1200.  Unlike the previous Amigas, it was a pretty difficult machine to find.  Most people I know had to order them from the back of Amiga magazines, because all the local stores had long since abandoned Amiga after the Amiga 3000.  Most Amiga 2000/500 owners I knew at the time of the A1200 launch had since moved on to the PC platform.  Personally, I was jaded with the expense of the Amiga 1200 after realizing the expense of adding a hard drive and more than 1MB of RAM to my lowly Amiga 500.

What tears me is the fact that I really liked the Amiga 1200; I really did.  I wanted it to be a huge success.  It deserved it.  The A1200 probably represents the last great thing from Commodore.  One of these days, I'll bring myself to buying one.  Those are some great shots, BTW.

I did get to briefly see both a 1200 and 600HD at a dealer in summer of 92 in scarborough.  They were a multi platform store having other systems as well.  Unfortunately I could not afford one at the time.  Then that place did still have a core of amiga users who were regulars until 94 or 95 just after the commodore bankruptcy I lost track of them as I was starting college at the time.  I cannot even remember the name of the place now but unfortunately like many PC dealders they are long gone.  Ironically they did hold on longer than many IBM compatible only dealers did in the 90's most of those came in went in a year or less with the longest going perhaps 18 months aside from a few larger chains but those were indeed few.  Where I lived there was 4 dealers and within 2 years there were none.  the independent dissapeared first.  Another was a smaller chain that got bought out, moved then closed.  The other 2 were a store wholly owned by IBM which went down to half its size then closed and a large chain owned by Tandy US that lasted 18 months at most in their canadian operation.
