Tron and Tron: Legacy

     After Friday, I have my 3-week Christmas vacation... plenty of time to go to the cinema and see movies.  One of the movies I'd like to see is Tron: Legacy in 3-D.  Though I am skeptical of the new Tron (having seen the original Tron in 1982 in the theatre), I hope the storyline will be interesting.

         The new effects sure don't look like the old effects,

Thumbs up to Tron: Legacy!  An interesting (though not perfect) movie.  Its pluses outweighed any minuses.  I particularly liked the acting of the major leads.  I saw it in Disney 3-D; for $4 more I could have seen it in IMAX 3-D.  Later, I found out that the IMAX 3-D version is the superior viewing experience... oh, well. 
     By the way, today I came across my boxed Intellivision game, Tron: Solar Sailor.  I should set up the Intellivision game console and relive the Solar Sailor experience.

Next up, the Green Hornet movie in 3-D

With all the interest in the new Green Hornet movie, I've looked fondly at the creased, crisp lines of the Black Beauty, a 1965 Chrysler Imperial - a full-sized car from a time when full-sized really meant full-sized!  I even did some searching on the Net for info about this car.  Then I pulled back.  What was I thinking?  I already have a 1972 Ford Ranchero to restomod.  And a 1965 Chrysler would even be more challenging than a Ranchero.  Finding parts would be more difficult.  Safety measures would be non-existent, except for lap belts.  Drum brakes would not be great.  Reliabliity would be questionable (my father had a 1962 Chrysler Imperial Crown, and I remember it with a host of problems).

         But it would look good!

     At the Hollywood Collectors Show last Saturday, I briefly spoke to Cindy "Yori" Morgan of the original Tron movie.  I mentioned how I had signed an on-petition asking for the return of her character back to Tron.  I said that if Disney could bring back Bruce Boxleitner's and Jeff Bridge's characters, they could bring back hers.  She gratefully shook my hand and said that Disney has already "green-lighted" Tron 3, the Tron and Tron:Legacy DVD/Blu-ray releases in April, and a Tron t.v. show (!).

     Last night I finally got to see the Green Hornet movie in 3-D.  A popcorn, fun movie!  I'm glad that it did not delve into gloomy, dark characters who are always trying to redeem themselves.  Instead, it stayed light, frothy, flip, and humorous.  Perfect if you need something that does not take itself too seriously.
     I approve of the use of the original GH music near the end, the use of moire (like in the t.v. series), the tribute to Bruce Li, and of course, the Chrysler Imperial before and after transformation into the Black Beauty.
     It's nearing the $100 million mark domestically (and I don't know its foreign box-office take), but it was an expensive movie to make.  I don't know if it will be profitable to the studio.

...Disney has already "green-lighted" Tron 3, the Tron and Tron:Legacy DVD/Blu-ray releases in April, and a Tron t.v. show (!).

I'm tempted to buy the combo Blu-ray/DVD packs of Tron and Tron: Legacy (even the 3-D version, though I don't have a 3-D t.v. yet).  However, all monies are going to my various travels.

The Blu-Ray version of tron is worth it, I have it and it does look good. I passed on the 3D version as I don't have a 3Dtv and won't be getting one. I do think it includes a dvd copy as well as many people have an old style tv & dvd player in another room, bedroom, cottage whatever.

Green hornet is one I missed in theatres but I do plan on renting it at least, possibly buying the blu ray later on. On a side note I have been playing the Tron: Evolution video game the past few months, it is a difficult game, reminds me of the 1980's games that required exact jumps. A lot of the action shows heavy elements of both Parkour and Copoira. It is not as bad as some of the reviews but if you do play it save it for when you have an hour or two as you'll be replaying some scenes several times to figure them out.

Almost forgot this but if anyone reading this is a PSP owner, future shop is selling the original tron movie on umd for $5.98, I picked it up a while ago and it looks not bad for a small screen. I do not buy many umd movies since I simply convert from dvd instead but at that price its worth it.  For those outside canada future shop does have online ordering but I do not know if they ship outside canada or not.
