Letting go of about half a dozen Mac LC520s

Sitting under a table in our school library are about 1/2 dozen Macintosh LC520s.  They are to picked up and disposed.  I asked the librarian about what kind of condition they were in, and she said that some may work and others are only good for parts.

That's the all-in-one that looks like this:

Incidentally, my favourite type of Mac.  Also the kind I provided tech support for back in the day.  If I were a collector, I'd definitely get one.

I wonder if these could be configured for use by under-privileged kids?  There was plenty of educational and game software available for them.

Hmm, the ones I see under the table seem more yellowed and more well-used.  I will ask Duncan M. of TOGA if I should try to save them; he is an Apple aficionado, and if he wants one or more, I'll try to get them for him.

I've had a less-than-enthusiastic response from Duncan.  I guess he doesn't want me to save them.

Generally, the response I get from even the most devoted Macintosh fan for any Macintosh of the Performa era is, at best, less than enthusiastic.  It's almost as though they wish these machines never existed.  There must be some kid somewhere who would appreciate a computer like that.

Hi all, I'm new here.

So what ever happened to those LC 520s, did you end up saving some? I used one back in the day and really liked it, and have actually been looking for one for my collection. It was my favorite "classic" Mac as well. :)

No one expressed any interest.  :(  And so, I suppose the school has disposed of them by now.

Robert, it's not like you to not hang on to at least one.

You must be cutting back.  ;)

Heh, if they were Commodores or Amigas, that would be a different matter.  And I'm not really an Apple collector...

Now that I am back to school, I've looked through the chainlink fence into the district's maintenance yard.  There is a pile of disposed computers sitting out there in the 100-degree heat of the day.  The gate to the yard is locked, but if I take out my binoculars, I might be able to spy on what is laying there.  Perhaps the LC 520's!

If there is, do let us know.  Highvoltage isn't a regular member here, but he is a friend of mine and I will let him know immediately if you see anything that's worth salvaging.

Any chance you can use the superzoom on that new camcorder of yours and capture a snapshot picture of the booty?

Ah, you mean the new, *new* camcorder.  :)  A few weekends ago the Canon HV-30 was stolen while I was packing up the car.  Moral - don't leave your car doors open for a few seconds while you're in the house getting more things to put in the car... especially not in South Stockton.  I have a new Canon HV-40 with true 24p video-recording and multi-function button in front; otherwise, it is the same camcorder, except more costly.
I will try to get a shot of the items tomorrow (if they are still there).

What a shame.  With my camcorder, if it's not attached to my hand, it's well hidden out of sight.  In public, it's either locked away out of sight, or on my person somewhere.

Did you record the serial number of the stolen camcorder?  The local police in my area work with the pawn shops, so if your camcorder turns up, they can tell you who stole it.

No, I did not record the serial number.  :(

Yesterday, one of the school janitors let me into the school maintenance yard, and I walked over to the pallets of dusty, broken computer equipment -- monitors, desktop cases, and printers.  The last rain left them spotted.  I gingerly walked around the pallets, careful not to move anything for fear that the equipment would tumble down on me.  I found the Mac LC520's, three or four of them.  Most were stripped for their parts, leaving gaping holes in the front and back of the units.  However, there was one that seemed complete.

Should I rescue the complete one?
